The Lie
AroView: A confronting and powerful documentary about the tragic murder of 21-year-old English back-packer Grace Millane in Auckland 2018, the shame of which was felt by the whole country.
As such it is not easy to recommend this film, but British film-maker Helena Coan has done a tremendous job in telling a difficult story, holding up an exacting truth to the lie(s) that swirled around this case through astonishing CCTV and police interrogation footage availed to the producers.
It is not a film about the devastation left in her wake, but instead about how something so unimaginable can happen here, or anywhere in the modern world, and how further dishonour can be brought upon a victim through the justice system.
Also recommended: An RNZ interview with director Helena Coan.
“It is a film that has control and precision in its narrative - and more importantly than all of that, sensitive respect for its victim and memory.” ~Darren Bevan, Darren’s World of Entertainment
“If the film’s existence in any way speeds up a ban on the so-called “rough sex” defence, and helps to spare another family from having to sit through a trial in which that is deployed, then it will have achieved a great deal.” ~Graeme Tuckett, Stuff
