AroView: A supremely graceful portrait of the internationally renowned country artist’s journey to record an album entirely in te reo Māori, the result of which, Te Whare Tīwekaweka, will likely become a New Zealand classic.
Filmed over four years at home (Ōhinehou, Lyttelton) and abroad, and with appearances by fellow Kiwi music ambassadors Aldous Harding and Lorde, the film contrasts Williams’ confidence as a performer and composer with his vulnerability as an ākonga (student) of Te Reo. The film deftly balances his two worlds of being Māori and Pākehā, and of being Marlon the pop star and the humble, private human, and will only enhance his reputation as one of our country’s favourite sons. No pressure, Marlon!
“A brave, essential and joyous film that couldn’t have arrived at a better time. Much more than another music documentary, it feels like quietly witnessing a piece of history.” ~Alex Casey, The Spinoff
“Reviewing Ngā Ao E Rua – Two Worlds wasn’t easy. Not because the film lacked quality - far from it - but because I’m a self-professed Marlon Williams superfan.” ~Coco Lance, RNZ
