The Weed Eaters
AroView: Loaded with no-budget Kiwi charm, this DIY indie word-of-mouth hit brings loads of fresh ideas to its genius alchemy of stoner and splatter comedy.
Set over a New Year’s Eve holiday in a gorgeous part of the rural Canterbury, two young couples discover a mysterious batch of weed that brings a gourmet sensation to the taste of human flesh. What follows is a comedy of gory errors that derives as many laughs out of their discomfort and guilt about their transgression. The performances keep it real and relatable with a group chemistry of real mates playing into a tightly focused story of their own concoction. A special garnish is the soundtrack, which combines an exciting alt-jazz score with the glistening slacker-pop of Mousey, Merk and others.
“The Weed Eaters has cemented itself as my favourite local film in recent memory.” ~Madeleine Chapman, The Spinoff
“This little indie film feels like the defibrillator the NZ film industry didn’t know it needed – a necessary jolt to the system that reminds us what cinema made with heart, guts, and purpose can look like.” ~Shamin Yazdani, The 13th Floor
