The Teacher Who Promised The Sea
AroView: With the rise of global fascism, this period drama feels more relevant than ever in spite of its specific address to a nation still reckoning with the trauma of the Spanish Civil War.
Framed by the contemporary quest of young woman in search of resolution for her ailing grandfather, it’s set just before the war in 1935 where a new primary school teacher brings his ideals and inspiration to a village of open-minded children and close-minded figures of authority. That he is a bit naïve to the political turmoil is possibly the point – he’s a man who refuses to stifle his own childhood wonder and mission to pass it on. A tragic tale that is much kinder than it is cruel, it’s one that fiercely flies a flag for education, and that itself would work well as a text in a modern classroom.
“A film full of beautiful moments that puts the history smack bang in our faces and asks us not to look away.” ~Stephen Romei, The Australian
“A film which works both on a political and a dramatic level.” ~Phil Butland, CinePhil
