The People's Joker
AroView: A distinct product of Gen-Z, DIY and likely ADHD ingenuity baked into the genuinely queer comic perspective of writer-director-editor-actor Vera Drew.
Underneath its irreverent humour and bold parodying of fiercely protected DC comics characters (claiming “fair use” of copyright) lies a poignant story of a misunderstood childhood and self-acceptance as a trans woman. It might be too much of an anarchic hot mess for the normie crowd to comfortably digest, but it’s bursting with ideas and the combined charisma and sincerity of Ms. Drew herself that make this agitated confessional so oddly compelling.
“At its core, The People’s Joker asks why we view some as “heroes” and others as “villains”. Literally and metaphorically – is Batman actually just a closeted gay man with a history of abuse and far too much money? It urges us to consider if life really is as black and white as heroes and villains, or man and woman.” ~Huia Haupapa, NZIFF
“Hollywood’s superhero blockbuster business has grown creatively stale, but Vera Drew’s irreverent renegade opus The People’s Joker is just the antidote the genre desperately needs.” ~Jen Yamato, Washington Post
