The Odd Couple

1h 45m Comedy 1968

AroView: An adaptation of the smash hit Broadway play by Neil Simon, this was the first and best of a popular franchise of TV series and spin-offs set around the timeless premise of two middle-aged divorcee pals who can’t bear to live with one another.

It’s a wonderful showcase for the respective acting talents of Walter Matthau as macho slob Oscar Madison and Jack Lemmon as neurotic fuss-pot Felix Unger, with brilliantly barbed dialogue thinly veiling a touching story of the heartbroken Felix who genuinely feels like a fish out of the water in the boys’ club.

In spite of a couple of allusions best left in the 60’s, this holds up as a comedy classic ‘bromance’ that is relatable to co-habitating couples of all stripes. The supporting cast are pretty great too, but it’s at its best when it’s just the two comic legends sparking off one another in a way that is funny, sad and incorrigibly human.
