Romuald & Juliette
AroView: With its progressive message of racial, economic and romantic equality, this is a French comedy classic written and directed by Coline Serreau that followed her mid-80s smash hit, ‘Three Men and a Cradle’.
She sets up a farcical first-act takedown of corporate greed before pouring heart and soul into the deepening relationship between the impudent company boss and the Afro-Caribbean cleaning lady who struggles to make ends meet as a solo mother-of-five.
Ironically, the more romantic it gets, the funnier it gets, and the director and lead actors Daniel Auteuil and Fermine Richard completely sell the unlikely romance by never forcing the point, and so by the film’s end, the viewer is just as smitten.
