A New Leaf
AroView: Delightfully witty black comedy written, directed and starring the trailblazing Elaine May in her directorial debut. Walter Matthau plays a rich bachelor whose idle but extravagant lifestyle has left him penniless, so he figures his only option is to marry a rich woman… and murder her.
Elaine May apparently disowned this film after it was radically recut by the studio and subsequently fell into obscurity. Despite some disjointedness, especially in the latter half, this off-beat 70’s classic is often riotously funny with many memorable lines and scenes, and a brilliant comic performance by the incomparable Walter Matthau. Ripe for the rediscovery!
