A 40-years-later sequel to the 1984 comedy classic directed by and starring the late, great Rob Reiner as documentarian Marty DiBergi who follows estranged Spinal Tap bandmates David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel and Derek Smalls, now in their late 70’s, as they prepare for a reunion concert in New Orleans.
Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer are joined by music royalty Paul McCartney and Elton John, as they wrestle with their checkered past to put on a show that they hope will solidify their place in the pantheon of rock ‘n’ roll.
Having mellowed in their twilight years, the joke is not so much about the absurdity of the genre but the phenomenon of being a rock dinosaur and the challenge of sustaining a living over the decades.
“There’s something beautiful about the fact that they’ve found their way to this moment, after so many decades — one where the only laughter they care about is each other’s.” ~Liz Shannon Miller, Consequence
“If you are part of that target demographic, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues has a lot to enjoy. That’s especially true when the film shows off a few surprisingly heartwarming moments, which were definitely not as prevalent in the original story.” ~Aidan Kelley, Collider
