Neil Young: Heart of Gold

1h 44m Concert, Documentary 2006

Academy-award winning director Jonathan Demme beautifully captures Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legend Neil Young as he prepares and presents the performance of a lifetime with the help of his wife Peggi and friends at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry.

AroView: Following a tricky bout of surgery in 2005, iconic Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young decided to dedicate a year to creating this splendidly laid back concert film.

With spartan canvas backdrops, ‘heartland’ image projections and country and western costumery, Young concentrates on the Americana portions of his oeuvre, slow peddling through cuts from ‘Praire Wind’, ‘Harvest Gold’ and ‘Harvest’ with the help of guests like Emmylou Harris, Spooner Oldham and steel guitarist Ben Keith. While Young’s emotive delivery is as authentic as ever, director Demme creates his own vision of the singer’s majestic grace with a subtle quilt work of camera intercutting and soft lighting.
