AroView: Ben Mendelsohn returns for the director of larrikin comedy “Idiot Box” (1997) with something altogether more mature, philosophical and ambitious – a slow burn, authentic meditation on life in an off-the-beaten-track Australian town.
Mendelsohn’s title character returns to the roost after seeking his fortune in the city to find his brother has married his former fiancé, while his presence also ripples through the rest of the community. With little plot or melodrama, this steadily involves and ultimately rewards patience with its attention to detail, crisp location photography and lucid message about miscommunicated love.
