A goregously-appointed biography of Charles Aznavour, a man who beat all odds to become not only one of France’s most beloved entertainers, but personified French culture to the English-speaking world.
Raised in poverty as a son of Armenian refugees, and ridiculed for his short stature and raspy tenor voice, Aznavour’s early attempts at a showbiz career during the Occupation falter. Whilst a gifted lyricist and storyteller, his material finds more success in the hands of others, including his friend Pierre Roche (Bastien Bouillon), and later the imperious Edith Piaf (Marie-Julie Baup), who becomes his mentor and supporter.
But Aznavour soon realises his own ambitions; his empathetic chansons about the heartbreaks and passions of the common man catapult him to global attention. Led by Taram Rahim’s astonishing performance and vocal prowess, this is an intimate yet spectacular biopic that serves as a triumphant reminder of the power and impact of music.
“What elevates the film, aside from the adoration of Idir and Malade, is the commanding performance of Algerian actor Tahar Rahim. It’s more than charm and alarmingly good vocals. Right down to the singer’s idiosyncratic posture, he inhabits Aznavour and the result is at once both operatic and intimate. Terrific stuff.” ~Colin Fraser, Moviereview
