Daddy Nostalgie

1h 45m Drama 1990

AroView: A French drama that pairs two magnetic Brits, Dirk Bogarde (in his last screen role) plays a recuperating but dying man who reflects on his shortcomings as a father but new found enchantment with his adult daughter (Jane Birkin), perhaps over that of his conservative wife (Odette Laure).

It’s a tender, philosophical chamber piece from director Betrand Tavernier that flits between French and English while the musical strains of ‘These Foolish Things’ sets the gentle, bittersweet tone.

“This is a wonderful story, but “Daddy Nostalgia” is not a very good title for it. I like the British title better: “These Foolish Things.” That refers to the song that haunts the movie… Bertrand Tavernier’s whole movie is told in the tone of that song, as a fond, elegiac memory.” ~Roger Ebert
