AroView: A gang of teenage delinquents rally to defend their tower block from alien invaders in this quick-witted urban sci-fi comedy that recycles several genres into something deceptively smart and original.
Apart from the requisite thrills and spills, this pays admirable attention to the authentic vibe of the “street” with its core cast of non-professionals, and carries a gratifying subtext about social prejudices and the plight of the underclass. A striking writer-directing debut for Joe Cornish, who was formerly known best as half of the comedy duo, “Adam and Joe”, his chops here are reminiscent of Guy Ritchie’s splash with LOCK, STOCK & TWO SMOKING BARRELS. From the producers of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, this is tar from the same rich barrel.
