Ick
AroView: A demented horror-comedy ride that is both a product of and commentary on these chaotic, attention-deprived times. On one level it’s a go-for-broke alien invasion, but in the middle of all the gross-out CGI mayhem is a teacher and student (Brandon Routh and Malina Weissman) trying to rewire their relationship as newly-discovered father and daughter.
It’s the brainchild of renowned music video director Joseph Kahn, who throws the viewer in the deep end with a breakneck-speed editing style that all seems a bit much, but it’s worth pushing through to soak up the social satire and elaborate one-liners that soon pay off more often than not. Some might find it ‘ick’, but there are enough original ideas flying about in this knowingly crazy B-movie to make it click with a future cult fanbase.
“As much a deeply affectionate love letter to eighties-era horror-comedies as it is a synapse-stretching exercise in defiant maximalism…” ~Barry Hertz, The Globe and Mail (Toronto)
“Playfully mocking today’s always-online, virtual-signaling teen generation while simultaneously embracing its bevy of old-school tropes, it’s exactly the sort of crowd-pleaser designed to be seen in a theater, after dark, with a rowdy audience.” ~Nick Schager, The Daily Beast
“With a great cast, excellent visual effects, and perfectly edited and executed scenes and transitions, there is a lot to love.” ~Ben Gibbons, Screen Rant
