AroView: The spectacular alpine setting will take your breath away, but then so will the character and period details that adorn this family portrait of subsistence in the remote, cold climes of an Italian village in 1943.
At its centre is a young woman’s delicate courtship with a humble returned soldier that comes at a price, but it’s also the rites-of-passage story of her ever-curious younger sisters who also have to negotiate the implicit codes and high standards set by their father, the head teacher in the village. It’s a tale of burgeoning womanhood that lives up to its own high standards by telling a wartime story the way it really might have been.
“The remarkable, raw-boned and ravishing Vermiglio takes place in the past but operates like a future family secret playing out in the present tense.” ~Jessica Kiang, Variety
“Vermiglio is rich in textures and tactile pleasures and is performed with conviction by a cast mixing professional and non-professional actors.” ~Ankit Jhunjhunwala, The Playlist
“Pulsates with harsh, anguished emotion, thanks in no small part to splendid visuals that make it the most beautiful film of the year.” ~Nick Schager, The Daily Beast
