The Blair Witch Project
AroView: The most profitable film in history on a cost-to-gross basis, this handycam horror struck paydirt thanks to a swag of resourcefulness and a hefty dose of originality, both of which were doubly applied to its marketing campaign.
What you get for $40,000 is a convincing mock documentary that stages its cast of three as amateur film-makers trying to shed light on the local legend of the Blair Witch. Literally left alone in the woods for eight days with a couple of cameras and sparing instructions, the trio contend with the dark, cold night, a series of grisly portents, and the near-unbearable presence of each other. Forget the ridiculous hype, and appreciate it for what it is - a remarkable one-off.
