AroView: Our pick for holiday season viewing, this is a highly entertaining, unpredictable crime caper with rom-com appeal from director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine).
Channing Tatum proves a great fit as a desperate family man driven to “making terrible decisions” like robbing hamburger restaurants and paying the consequences, only to escape prison and hide out for months inside a big box toy store. Kirsten Dunst is equally suited as a down-to-earth store employee who falls for his not-entirely-truthful charms. It’s a grown-up yet broadly appealing film that makes the most the absurd twists and turns of its remarkable true story. ★★★★
“With a career-best Tatum at the center and an ensemble that fills in every corner with warmth and wit, Roofman is one of this year’s most pleasant surprises.” ~Tania Hussain, Collider
“In the end, it’s the through-the-roof chemistry between the two leads that makes the film worthy of repeat viewing.” ~Peter Debruge, Variety
“Roofman is another standout film from Cianfrance who continues to pull us in with fascinating character studies and explorations of humanity.” ~Ema Sasic, Next Best Picture
