Requiem for a Dream
AroView: The indignities of drug addiction are given the full-blown treatment by director Darren Aronofsky, who deploys a catalogue of cutting-edge techniques to vividly chronicle the downward spirals of four junkies.
Adapting the novel by Herbert Selby Jnr. (Last Exit to Brooklyn) as a visceral horror vision, the extreme and audacious subjective style presents a challenge even for the non-squeamish. Best story involves Ellen Burstyn, who gives an incredible (Oscar-nominated) performance as an elderly widow addicted to diet pills and infomercial. The superb soundtrack is by former indie pop-star Clint Mansell.
