AroView: An outstanding British film that dares to go places that mainstream cinema has never gone, but does so with great sensitivity, compassion and perhaps above all, truth.
Harry Melling plays a timid, sexually repressed gay man who is lured into a relationship with a handsome, leather-clad alpha male (Alexander Skarsgård). But it’s a relationship not as we know it, but one that plays out under the strict codes of dominance and submission practiced by a wider kink community. It’s a dark, uncomfortable and yet funny ‘dom-com’ in which the actors and first-time feature director Harry Lighton fully commit to the assignment. Not for everyone, but truly extraordinary.
“Lighton has made a truly provocative anti-romance that’s funny, honest, strangely touching. It’s an exceptional balance act that makes Pillion the unlikeliest crowd-pleaser.” ~Zhuo-Ning Su, The Film Stage
“Often very funny without ever kink-shaming, thanks to the wry script, Skarsgård’s deadpan, and Melling’s guilelessness.” ~Esther Zuckerman, The Daily Beast
“Pillion is less about the shock factor of some very graphic gay kink than the nuances of love, desire and mutual needs within a sub/dom relationship.” ~David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
