Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle
AroView: Jennifer Jason Leigh lends her perfectly mannered precision to Dorothy Parker, an anguished yet famously witty wordsmith and socialite of the ‘Algonquin Round Table’ who merrily drowned her sorrows through prohibition-era Hollywood.
Campbell Scott, Matthew Broderick and Andrew McCarthy play the key men in her life, while a constellation of stars (incl. Jennifer Beals, Peter Gallagher, Wallace Shawn, Martha Plimpton, Lili Taylor, James LeGros, Gwyneth Paltrow and Heather Graham) are marshalled with skill by director Alan Rudolph, a protégé of Robert Altman.
Centred on the love and play of language, the screenplay is rich in dialogue (best appreciated with the subtitles on), it is less a standard biopic than a textured portrait of bustling creative lives, photographed and appointed in high style. But it is Ms. Leigh who holds court who holds court as a singular, modern woman who was both adored and mired in her own romantic tragedy.
“Very stylish, as you’d expect from Altman and Rudolph. A very likeable and amusing film that never flags. Parallels café culture in Paris in the same era. Many lovely touches. Fabulously witty & highly recommended!” ~AroVideo User Review
