Metropolis
AroView: Fritz Lang’s masterpiece is a magnificent marriage of pure cinema innovation and startlingly ambitious set design.
Set around the year 2000, a mammoth city is ruled by a super-efficient industrialist, who kidnaps the ‘saintly’ representative of the workers and has her replaced with a robot replica. But the plan backfires when the evil mecha-human incites the massed workers to revolt. Taking sixteen months to film with a cast of 37,383 and an uber-budget of $2 million, the film was a mammoth undertaking and astounding achievement even by today’s standards.
Newly Reconstructed & Restored version (from a print discovered in 2008) includes an additional 25 minutes of footage.
