Lies We Tell
AroView: Far from a prim and proper period piece, this is a juicy Victorian Gothic melodrama where bad manners run amok in a palatial country manor. Agnes O’Casey nails it in the role of a feisty, orphaned 18-year-old who refuses to be intimidated out of her inherited fortune by various vultures, including her estranged, unscrupulous uncle and his two creepy children.
Based on the 1864 Irish novel ‘Uncle Silas’ by Sheridan Le Fanu, the dialogue demands you pay attention to its rich and florid metaphors, the visual compositions are potent, and the soundtrack underscores its mastery at blending genres. Released overseas without much fanfare, it might just be the most underrated film of the year.
“A tightly laced, elegantly cut gothic period drama… it insightfully reworks some classic feminist literary notions, filtered through a very 21st-century approach to period material with its unsettling score, jittery editing and nods to horror tropes.” ~Leslie Felperin, The Guardian
“A singular performance by young talent Agnes O’Casey in the lead role gives this pretty period piece a serrated edge.” ~Fionnuala Halligan, Screen Daily
