AroView: An enjoyably edgy comic-thriller centred on a fumbling thief (Robert Downey Jnr.) who by chance wins an audition for a film part, then is spirited away to Hollywood for ‘role research’ with a gay private investigator (Val Kilmer). It all soon morphs into a genuine caper set at Christmas time.
Ripping through its narrative with sarcastic and inventive relish, this was something of a ‘comeback’ miracle for director Shane Black, better known as the long-blocked writer of blockbusters like LETHAL WEAPON. With homages to his film noir heroes sprinkled throughout - along with quirky flashbacks, meta-filmic twists and verbal asides - this will satisfy all but the congenitally cynical.
