Eyes Without a Face
AroView: Les yeux sans visage is a landmark European horror that tells with French artistry and tonal malevolence the magnificent obsession of a surgeon determined to restore his daughter’s disfigured face with the flesh of another. Requiring nubile young women as unwitting ‘donors’, they are lured into his ghastly scheme by his loyal and doting lover who herself has benefited from his handywork.
Director Georges Franju marries clinical gore and expressive black-and-white images to sinister, seminal effect, and though one could argue the third act doesn’t quite live up to the exquisite set up, it resolves in a powerful and poetic denouement.
