Crimes of the Future
AroView: Cult director David Cronenberg’s latest sci-fi speculation comes littered with references to his weird and wonderful previous works (incl. Naked Lunch, Existenz and Crash). It may be the 79-year-old director’s most ‘Cronenbergian’ film to date, fusing at least two of his abiding obsessions as a film-maker – human biological adaptation and fetishized performance art.
Viggo Mortensen steps in as his proxy once again, though he’s arguably outflanked this time by the two delicious performances of Lea Seydoux and Kristen Stewart.
“It’s marvelous to have Cronenberg back and to behold his undimmed, unparalleled skill at welding the formulations of horror and science fiction to the cinema of ideas.” ~Justin Chang, L.A. Times
“It’s an extraordinary planet that Cronenberg lands us down on, and insists we remove our helmets before we’re quite sure we can breathe the air.” ~Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
