Alvin Purple

1h 35m Comedy, Ozploitation 1973

Alvin Purple is a quiet, urban Australian male who finds himself the unlikely object of female lust. The film tracks him from his schooldays through early jobs - water-bed salesman, sex therapist - until eventually he becomes a convent gardener, but even then he inflames the nuns with a desire to fornicate with him. While Alvin searches for true love, any woman who meets up with him is gripped by an inexplicable, compulsive lust. Jacki Weaver, Lynette Curran and Penne Hackforth-Jones are amongst those who are afflicted, with Hackforth-Jones taking Alvin to court to expose the blue movie scam he and a mad psychiatrist have perpetrated on patients… But is Alvin guilty? Let the court of learned judge Noel Ferrier decide… and let a climactic chase by angry husbands begin…

Aroview: The first of a wave of Australian sex-comedies that proved exceptionally popular in 70s Oz. Here Blundell plays an ordinary Ocker who has a “way with the ladies”, going on to experience a string of social misadventures.
