AroVision is proud to supplement the Whānau Mārama NZIFF presentation of I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing with three additional works by dir. Patricia Rozema.
You can rent all three films for a specially discounted festival price.
Patricia Rozema (b. 1958) is a Canadian film director, writer and producer who blazed a trail for female filmmakers in 1987 with I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing, and went on to create a key work in the lesbian film canon with When Night is Falling in 1995.
Along with contemporaries like Jane Campion and Sally Potter, Rozema has continued to make startlingly original feminist works of cinema, most recently with Mouthpiece (2018), which she regards as her “most directly political film”. She is also the sole female director affiliated with film-makers collectively dubbed the ‘Toronto New Wave’ in the 1980s and 90s.
