Mouthpiece

1h 31m Drama 2018
NZIFF2025

AroView: The latest film from the celebrated Canadian director Patricia Rozema is just as fully realised and satisfying as her best-known work.

Based on the stageplay by the performers themselves (Amy Nostbakken and Norah Sadava), it reflects on the complicated relationship between a 30-year-old daughter and her deceased mother, only the protagonist is played by both actors simultaneously. Their push and pull over writing a eulogy in the days leading up to the funeral becomes an amusing and yet deeply moving ‘dialogue’ that also smartly interrogates what it is to be an ever-conflicted contemporary woman. ★★★★

“In revealing Cassandra’s interior life, Rozema lays bare the modern female condition in an epic battle that is by turns lacerating, soothing and heartbreaking.” ~Simon Houpt, The Globe and Mail

“A film that is both audacious in execution and relatable, even for those of us who don’t live in women’s bodies.” ~Liam Lacey, Original-Cin

“Mouthpiece is a deeply moving piece of work.” ~Sheila O’Malley, RogerEbert.com
