Tove
AroView: A captivating drama about the world-renowned Finnish writer, painter, illustrator and feminist icon Tove Jansson (1914-2001), creator of the fairy-tale Moomin universe.
The film follows her early adult life from the end of WWII, where her creative and non-conformist impulses were challenged, then manifested in a gateway lesbian affair with theatre director Viveca Bandler before her famous lifelong partnership with Tuulikki Pietilä.
“Poysti’s subtle, layered performance conveys Tove’s complex dilemma with sweetness and pain. This is a portrait not of a lady on fire, but of a woman struggling to strike the match.” ~G. Allen Johnson, San Francisco Chronicle
“Marking her fifth feature, Bergroth flexes her considerable cinematic powers, conjuring vibrantly expressive visuals and confident performances from her talented cast.” ~Alissa Simon, Variety
“The film doesn’t particularly require in-depth knowledge of Moominism and can be enjoyed for its bright performances, on-point costumes and sets, and empathic portrait of young love.” ~The Hollywood Reporter, Leslie Felperin
