Touchez Pas au Grisbi
AroView: Laid-back, influential French noir chronicling a wealthy, retired racketeer (Jean Gabin) who is pulled back into the life of crime when his friend gets kidnapped and held for a huge ransom.
Director Jacques Becker steers away from the puffed-up bravado of many of the genre’s American counterparts through measured storytelling and a reluctant lead character, perfectly pitched by a world-weary Gabin.
“A wonderful treasure from the seemingly inexhaustible cornucopia of crackling French crime dramas.” ~Kenneth Turan, LA Times
“The magic here is all in the telling: in the graceful, laconic direction of Jacques Becker.” ~Edward Guthmann, SF Chronicle
