Top Secret!

1h 30m Comedy 1984

AroView: It’s no secret that this is one of the best of the Abrahams/Zucker Bros comedies (Flying High/Airplane) with Val Kilmer as a rather dim, Elvis-type rock ‘n’ roll singer who, in an unexplained timewarp, is recruited as a spy to fight the Nazis.

Secret Cinema Reveal #18: Several people asked what was the movie that we screened for the opening of the 2024 season, to which I sternly replied it was “Top Secret!” – the kind of joke that could easily be in the film of that title from 1984. Utterly silly and consistently funny would be the way most of us would describe it – this Zucker Brothers-Jim Abrahams yuck-fest is a cross between a WWII spy thriller and 50’s teenage musical with a dishy and impressively nimble Val Kilmer as a himbo pop-star caught in Nazi Resistance shenanigans. Some reviews said it ran out of gas, but some of the best gags come in the final act – one involving a cow in gumboots and another quite brilliant underwater fight sequence.
