Tom Thumb (Le Petit Poucet)

1h 30m Family, Fantasy 2001

AroView: Ambitious, enjoyably dark rendering of Perrault’s classic fable, “Le Petit Poucet” told with trademark French twistedness and aplomb, kids will find this all the more otherworldly and interesting in its native language.

Five boys are abandoned in the woods by their desperate, poverty-stricken parents, where they eventually meet a ghastly ogre and his five daughters. Braver boys and girls will feast on some juicy moments before the traditional fairytale ending breaks the spell. Also notable for regular Miyazaki composer Joe Hisaishi’s first non-Japanese score.
