The Holy Mountain
AroView: Jodorowsky’s determinedly surrealist vision of mystical enlightenment about a man (the mad Mexican himself) who journeys mountain-ward to discover the lore of the nine ancient sages - here personified in abstract vignettes named after each of the planets.
Largely dispensing with dialogue and narrative coherence, his epic hallucination instead commits to some of the most potent imagery ever consigned to film, with real-life amputees, armour-clad frogs and a mass of Jesus effigies among its catalogue of prurient phenomena. A product of naked ambition, this ranks as one of the bona fide ‘freaks’ of cinema.
