AroView: This little-seen yet glorious tragicomedy from Vittorio De Sica (The Bicycle Thief) stars Alberto Sordi as an excitable but luckless entrepreneur trying to take advantage of the economic boom of 1960’s Italy, but instead finding himself exploited by a rich industrialist couple’s morally dubious vanity project.
How far will he go to pay his debts earn the respect of his glamorous, social-climbing wife? Will he give his right arm? Or perhaps an eyeball? The luminous black-and-white photography is another of the film’s many pleasures.
