The Artist
AroView: The director and star of the OSS 117 movies combine for this glorious homage to the Golden Age of cinema, set in 1920s Hollywood on the eve of the ‘talking pictures’ revolution.
Gamely living up to its ambitious conceit of playing as a silent, black-and-white film, it was the delightful surprise winner of Academy Award for Best Picture. Though perhaps diminished on the smaller screen, it is buoyed by the magic of pure visual storytelling and is a worthy latter-day companion piece to that other masterful homage to the same period in Hollywood history, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN.
“Michel Hazanavicius’s black-and-white throwback glitters and gleams with utterly of-the-moment wit and romantic zest.” ~Washington Post
