Showgirls
AroView: Hot off their success with “Basic Instinct”, director Paul Verhoeven and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas re-teamed for another sexploitation film that sent most critics into howls of derision.
The empty hubris and oversaturation of female body parts are partly compensated by technical prowess in set design, cinematography, costume, choreography and music departments. Perhaps, no more shameful to enjoy than an episode of the contemporaneous “Melrose Place”, it’s as glamourous and grotesque, as delirious and vacuous as the city of Las Vegas itself.
Arguably responsible for derailing the Hollywood career of its star, Elizabeth Berkley, but more recently re-examined as a satirical inversion of the American dream into a glitzy nightmare - this phenomenon explored in the documentary, “You Don’t Nomi”, also available.
