AroView: John Wayne plays a sheriff who is pressured by a gang of villains to release one of their clan from his jail. Despite being surrounded and outnumbered by gunmen, he refuses to back down, backed by his deputy, a recovering alcoholic (Dean Martin).

Acutely observed and acted, it’s one of director Howard Hawks’ very best.
