AroView: A clever and propulsive NYC thriller that crackles with an original idea as directed by David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water). Riz Ahmed stars as a fixer who brokers deals between malfeasant corporations and employee whistleblowers while concealing his identity through a relay service for the deaf.
His rigidly methodical character has no dialogue in the first thirty minutes of the film in an elegant set up involving a distressed new client (Lily James). Though it takes a questionable narrative turn in the third act, you will likely forgive it for the otherwise exciting, old-school conspiracy ride that feels hotly relevant in an age of corporate duplicity and ethical indifference.
“Like the best of its genre, it affords tantalizing entrée into a universe lurking just below society’s surface to which few are privy, and stages engrossing cloak-and-dagger games between players who know the rules and, more dangerously, how to break them.” ~Nick Schager, The Daily Beast
“A paranoid thriller that sneaks in its character study so stealthily that it takes a while to realize who is actually being studied.” ~Jesse Hassenger, Paste Magazine
“Set to the rhythms of a pulsing, ultramodern New York milieu, the film, at its best, wrings real tension and excitement out of the simple exchanging of clandestine messages and sensitive information.” ~Rocco T. Thompson, Slant Magazine
