Pressure

2h 6m • Drama, Black Cinema • 1976

AroView: Notable as the first dramatic feature by a black film-maker in the UK, this landmark film centres Herbert Norville as a British-born son of an immigrant family from Trinidad who finds himself caught between two cultures.

A smart, diligent teenager who struggles to find a job after graduating from high school, the pressure drops from both sides between his parents’ expectations of quiet conformity and his older brother’s influence as a black rights activist. Well-rounded in its presentation of the black immigrant dilemma, the film is expectedly rough around the edges, but the cast and crew bring an integrity and proficiency that elevate it above being a mere curiosity.
