Oslo Stories Trilogy: Dreams
The third in the Oslo Stories Trilogy (Sex/Love/Dreams) – a breathtaking troika of thematically connected dramas about human relationships by Norwegian writer-director Dag Johan Haugerud.
Johanne falls in love for the first time, with her French teacher. To preserve her feelings, she documents her emotions and experiences in writing. When her mother and grandmother read what she has written, they are initially shocked by its intimate content but soon see that it has literary potential. As they debate whether to publish it, Johanne navigates the gap between her romantic fantasy and reality, and all three women confront their differing views on love, sexuality, and self-discovery.
“The film’s precise juxtapositions of sight and sound produce brilliant flashes of insight, cascading specifics of texture and emotional coloration, and a cumulatively seductive, almost musical flow.” ~Justin Chang, The New Yorker
“Coming-of-age works are about discovery, but Dreams reminds us that this process can be fluid and fanciful.” ~Beatrice Loayza, The New York Times
“This is an amiably talky film, and yet I never for a moment considered that the central relationship was being presented with anything less than seriousness, and there is much dry comedy to be enjoyed.” ~Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
