Origin

2h 21m Drama, Docu-drama, History 2023

Written and directed by Ava DuVernay (Selma), this ambitious docu-drama chronicles the efforts of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson to investigate American racism and its connection to other hierarchies of human divisions that are not necessarily racial.

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (King Richard) is excellent as Isabel, who experiences profound personal losses as she crosses continents and cultures to craft one of the defining American books of our times: “Caste: The Origins of our Discontents”.

“Origin is so rich, expansive and wildly varied that one could easily see how DuVernay could have turned it into a mini-series. How great that she instead chose a compact and coherent feature…” ~Tomris Laffly, TheWrap

“DuVernay’s film unfolds with unpreaching clarity and fierce focus, full of heart and vibrant intent.” ~BBC
