AroView: The tenth film of writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson sees the ambitious director at the height of his powers in commanding a dynamic, sardonic thriller and ever-timely critique of the abuses of power, loosely adapted from a 1990 novel by Thomas Pynchon.

Leonardo Di Caprio fills his embattled character with dimension, hip-hop star Teyana Taylor offers a breakout performance, and Sean Penn as a corrupt military man is the most fun he’s been since he was in Ridgemont High. PTA cuts to the chase without suffering some of his indulgences and slam dunks the third act in a way he hasn’t quite done before. The hype means that not everyone will fall for it hook, line and sinker, but it would be hard to argue what this film doesn’t get right.
