Aroview: An impressive Australian modern ‘noir’, refreshingly off-centred around a hearing-afflicted cop who is assigned the night shift at a police caravan during a slipshod murder investigation.

While his script pushes the occupational-hazard aspect of law enforcement, dir. Matthew Saville’s strongest suit is his visual language, through which he creates a formidable sense of dread around the inscrutable, unusual presense of lead actor Brendan Cowell. Though not quite delivering the pay-off it promises, this is still a brilliantly assured debut that intrigues in the best sense of the term.
