Writer-director Celine Song follows the success of her debut feature Past Lives with this Manhattan-set romantic comedy-drama built around another love triangle.
Lucy (Dakota Johnson) is a young, ambitious New York City matchmaker who thinks she has love down to a formula. But when she meets a tall, dark, and handsome “unicorn” (Pedro Pascal) on the same night as a chance encounter with a broke old boyfriend (Chris Evans), she’s suddenly torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.
“From a distance, Materialists seems like a straightforward love-triangle rom com, but Celine Song transforms it into a meaningful, introspective drama about self-worth.” ~Siddhant Adlakha, IGN
“Playwright turned filmmaker Celine Song’s assured second feature is a refreshingly complex look at modern love, self-worth and the challenges of finding a partner in an unaffordable city, which once again treats three points of a romantic triangle with equal integrity and compassion.” ~David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
