Love is the Devil
AroView: A wonderfully audacious biopic of great Irish-British painter Francis Bacon (he of the “Screaming Pope” paintings), travels the raw-nerve edge of artistic inspiration and is itself a work of art.
Following Bacon’s (Derek Jacobi) sado-masochistic affair with a smalltime crook (Daniel Craig) in the late 1960s London, a rare aesthetic beauty is achieved without sacrificing narrative, and the period evocation is sublimely atmospheric. Numbering among the creepier hangers-on, Tilda Swinton and Anne Lambton are an added bonus.
