Ixcanul
AroView: A rare Guatemalan film, set on the slopes of an active volcano, where a marginalised Mayan community prepare for the arranged marriage of a 17-year old girl to the foreman of the coffee plantation that their lives centre around.
Her suitor must first spend months working in the city, which represents a world María knows nothing of, but is forced to grapple with. A small scale and humanistic ethnographic drama.
“An absorbing, beautifully-shot drama of cultural ritual and the drive of one young woman to escape a rudimentary social system.” ~ The Film Stage.
