God Help the Girl

1h 50m Musical, Drama, Indie 2014

AroView: Indie pop group Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch writes and directs this 60s-inspired musical set in Glasgow about an emotionally troubled young woman whose songwriting aspirations lead her to cross paths with two fledgling artists.

Featuring a gorgeous collection of songs, Murdoch’s skills as a tune and wordsmith might exceed his abilities as a director but it’s still eminently watchable, with Australian Emily Browning having a voice and a face “that could take her places”.

“Has a Judy Garland/Mickey Rooney let’s-put-on-a-show innocence, and exuberance.” ~Steven Rea, Philadelphia Enquirer
