Four Mothers
1h 29m Comedy, Drama, LGBT 2024

AroView: A delightful comedy-drama set in Dublin about a gay writer who, on the brink of success in the US, is forced to take care of his infirm mother and three other elderly widows whom his so-called friends have dumped on him for the week.

It’s a loose remake of the Italian hit “Mid-August Lunch” (2008) only through an engaging gay lens and with an Irish cultural specificity. James McArdle provides the warm heart of the film, while the four octogenarian women are each an endearingly quirky mix of insufferable and adorable. They’re all characters that you come to genuinely care about as they each bring something genuine to the table. Warmly recommended.

“Based on Gianni Di Gregorio’s hit Italian comedy-drama Mid-August Lunch (2008), Four Mothers is a charmer of a picture that lures us in with Edward’s angst but hits its stride when it digs into the dynamics between the four women… What could have been a sentimental plodder gets a pleasingly acerbic tang from the bracing cattiness of the dialogue.” ~Wendy Ide, The Guardian

“Above all, Four Mothers is good-natured, and full of people with whom we enjoy spending time.” ~Phil Butler, CinePhil

“This film stands out in the tapestry of Irish cinema, reflecting the cultural differences in caregiving while exploring larger existential themes that cut across national boundaries.” ~Naser Nahandian, Gazettely
