AroView: Perhaps director Michael Haneke’s least straightforward effort, this sketches a series of interconnected storylines loosely bound by themes of urban alienation, moral choice and determinism.
Juliette Binoche plays a horror-movie actress, by chance connected to a disturbed young immigrant from Mali and a homeless woman from some nameless Eastern European war zone. Their ‘realities’ seem to inform her own artistic straddling of appearance and reality, also mirrored in her husband’s career of war-photographer. Told in a series of short scenes, puctuated by black-outs, this still manages to leave the viewer squirming on the line between curiosity and self-incrimation.
